We recently went for a bit of a drive down the coast. Here in our region, even though it is winter, there is still much greenery, unlike other parts of the Country, where things seem very brown and dull this time of the year.
As we drove, I noticed alongside the road how many patches of grass there were that had been burned down. It sparked my interest and as I pondered on this, I researched it and I found that the grass is burned down – so that it can grow again – with new vigour and a fresh start.
Together with the grass, some plants that have sprouted too early are also burned down. The term that is used for this is ‘prescribed burns’, it is done for the benefit of growth in the future.
It made me think how symbolic that is for us as God’s children. So often we feel like we have just started growing in an area and then God applies a ‘prescribed burn’ in that area with His holy fire. We feel like it’s a set-back but God knows, it is a set-up of His love – for future growth. Have you ever felt like that? I have, many times!
When ‘prescribed burns’ are caused on natural grass, the weather has to be perfect, otherwise the fire will not be controllable.
By the way, a fire cannot actually be controlled – it can only be contained. To contain something means to “have or hold (someone or something) within”.
Our “Fire Manager” – our Father, knows that ‘prescribed burns’ are necessary to burn out some junk out of us – or sometimes there are some early ‘plants’ that have sprouted too soon – but they will derail us in the future and have to be burned out too. But take heart, beloved, He will have and hold you in the palm of His hand. He will contain the fire and He will contain you…and like Shadrach, Meschach and Abednego – you won’t even smell like smoke.
